Quinnipiac Baseball's Gary Binkiewicz Tabbed As Bobcats Captain For 2014 Season
HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac baseball head coach Dan Gooley has announced the selection of senior Gary Binkiewicz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) as the Bobcats' captain for the 2014 season. In addition, Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) has been named Quinnipiac's co-captain for his junior season.
Binkiewicz announced his presence in the locker room and on the field after leading the Quinnipiac pitching staff in appearances (19) and saves (six) while posting a 2.73 earned-run average. Binkiewicz's ERA was the lowest among all Quinnipiac relievers while his 5.46 strikeouts-per-nine-innings was also the tops among all Bobcat relief pitchers.
Binkiewicz made his Bobcat debut in three innings of relief in Quinnipiac's 4-2 win against George Washington on Mar. 2 to pick up a save in his first collegiate appearance. In a 5-2 win at Richmond, Binkiewicz held the Spiders scoreless over two innings of work, while giving up one hit, for his second-straight save. Save No. 3 came in a 4-1 win at Akron in which he struck-out three batters over two innings while surrendering one hit in a second-straight scoreless outing.
He picked up his first collegiate win on Mar. 23 when he came on in relief in a come-from-behind win at Monmouth. He went to pick up three more saves, against Mount St. Mary's on Mar. 29, LIU Brooklyn on May 4 and at Fairleigh Dickinson on May 17. Binkiewicz also picked up the win in the third game of Quinnipiac's four-game set against the Knights.
Donaghue had a career-year, posting career-bests, in his second season, in hits (53), home runs (4), runs-batted-in (36), doubles (11) and slugging percentage (.406). Donaghue's four home runs and 36 RBI led the Bobcats, while he also accumulated nine multiple-RBI games and 14 multiple-hit games.
Of his most impressive performances, Donaghue had a four-hit day against Notre Dame in which two went for doubles while he also drove in two runs. Donaghue also had a two-home run, four-RBI day against Hartford and a seven-RBI outing against Central Connecticut State that included a grand slam in a 11-4 win.
Donaghue became the first Quinnipiac player to drive in seven runs in a game since Jeff Mainetti had seven RBI's against Fairleigh Dickinson on Mar. 26, 2013. Donaghue hit a three-run double in the fifth and then followed with a grand slam in the sixth.
Quinnipiac opens the year at the Norfolk State Classic on Feb. 21-23 in Norfolk, Va. The Bobcats first game of the 2014 season will be against Villanova on Friday, Feb. 21, followed by contests against Norfolk State and the University of Buffalo.
