Baseball Sweeps Final NEC Doubleheader Of Season; Down FDU 4-2 and 10-5
The Quinnipiac baseball team swept Fairleigh Dickinson in a Northeast Conference doubleheader in Teaneck, N.J. The Bobcats took the first game, 4-2 in 11 innings, before closing the season with a 10-5 decision in the second game. Quinnipiac concludes the 2013 season with a 17-36 overall record and a 12-20 record in Northeast Conference play.
Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) was 4-for-8 for the day with three doubles and six RBI - all coming in Quinnipiac's 10-5 win in Game 2. Forrest Dwyer (Wakefield, R.I.) was 3-for-5 in the first game while Rob Pescitelli (Bayshore, N.Y.) drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning. Pescitelli also blasted his fourth home run of the season in the second game.
Justin Thomas (Enfield, Conn.) improved to 4-1 after surrendering four runs on seven hits over 7 1/3 innings in the second game of the twin-bill. Thomas becomes the first Quinnipiac freshman pitcher to win four games in his first season since Andy Mayer went 6-4 as a freshman in 2006.
In the first game, Quinnipiac overcame an early FDU run with a two-run fifth inning when Dale Long's (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) sacrifice bunt was misplayed an allowed Pescitelli to score to tie the game before Jesse Ullrich (Orange, Conn.) singled home Dwyer to give Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead.
After Fairleigh Dickinson tied the game - originally scheduled for seven innings - in the bottom of the sixth, the two teams played an extra four frames before Quinnipiac pushed two across in the top of the 11th. Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) doubled down the left field line to lead off the inning before moving to third on Guglietti's ground ball to second. After Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) popped up for the second out of the inning, Pescitelli singled to right field to score Migani and give Quinnipiac a 3-2 lead. Pescitelli stole second before scoring on Dwyer's single to give the Bobcats a two-run lead, 4-2.
Kevin O'Connell (Glastonbury, Conn.) pitched a perfect bottom half of the inning for the save while Gary Binkiewicz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) picked up the win after spinning 3 2/3 innings of three-hit, scoreless baseball. Kevin Castodio (Pawcatuck, Conn.) took the no-decision after holding Fairleigh Dickinson to two runs on eight hits over 6 1/3. Binkiewicz completes his first year with the Bobcats with a game-high 19 appearances to go with a 2-2 record and a 2.73 ERA and a team-best six saves.
In the second game, Guglietti had a base-clearing single, that was misplayed by FDU's centerfielder, that scored Migani, Dwyer and Mike Palladino (Rockville Center, N.Y.) to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead. After FDU tied the game with a three-run fourth, Guglietti drove in Migani to give the Bobcats a 4-3 lead. In the sixth, Quinnipiac blew the game open when it scored six times, including a RBI-single by Tom Donovan (Marshfield, Mass.) and a sacrifice fly by Dwyer before Guglietti cleared the bases again with a double.
Leading 9-3, the Bobcats gave back another run in the bottom of the eighth before Pescitelli connected for his fourth home run of the year. Dating back to May 3, a span of nine games, four of Pescitelli's seven hits in that time period have left the yard.
