BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The Quinnipiac baseball team snapped a 19-game losing streak with a pair of 3-1 wins against LIU Brooklyn in a Northeast Conference doubleheader in Brooklyn, N.Y. The Bobcats improve to 7-16 with the sweep while LIU Brooklyn goes to 12-11.
Quinnipiac entered this week, which included a non-conference match-up against UMass on Wednesday, May 1, with six home runs in their first 39 games of the season. In the span of four games, the Bobcats have doubled their home run output for the season, crushing six home runs in the span. Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) connected for a long-ball in the first game while Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) homered in the second game. Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) had a RBI and also scored another run in the Bobcats' Game 1 win while Mike Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.) was 2-for-3 with two runs scored in the second game.
Quinnipiac starter Spencer Kane (Wolcott, Conn.) improved to 3-4 after holding LIU Brooklyn to one run on seven hits in the complete game win in the first game of the doubleheader. The fourth-year starter pitched in and out of trouble through the first three innings before giving up a run in the fourth. Kane then bounced back and shutdown the LIU Brooklyn offense for the win. Nick Fabrizio (Peabody, Mass.) improved to 3-6 on the year after holding the Blackbirds to one run on five hits over six innings. Gary Binkiewicz (Scotch Plains, N.J.) converted on his fifth save of the season in the second game.
Game 1 Recap
Quinnipiac put up a run in the top of the fourth inning when Forrest Dwyer (Wakefield, R.I.) singled to lead off the inning. Dwyer then moved to second before Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) struck out for the first out the inning, and then moved to third on Guglietti's groundball to second. Donaghue then singled up the middle to score Dwyer and give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
The Blackbirds responded in the bottom half of the inning when Chris Untereiner singled to lead off the inning before scoring on a double by Jesse Brown to tie the game at 1-1.
In the top of the seventh, Guglietti connected for his second home run of the season to give Quinnipiac a 2-1 lead. Donaghue scored the Bobcats' third run of the game to give Quinnipiac a two-run lead. The Bobcats' shortstop reached on an error before stealing second. Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) reached base on an error by LIU Brooklyn's secon baseman, scoring Donaghue on the play.
In the bottom half of the inning, Kane walked Blackbirds' pinch hitter Melvin Rios to start the inning. Kane then struck pinch hitters Tito Marrerro and Peter Leonello for the first two outs of the inning before inducing a fly ball from Kyle DeMarco to end the game.
Game 2 Recap
In the third inning, Blumenthal led off the inning with a single before Steffen Herter (Amherst, Mass.) bunted him over to second base. After a passed ball moved Blumenthal to third, Jesse Ullrich's (Amity, Conn.) single scored Blumenthal to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, a pair of extra-base hits by Kyle DeMarco and John Ziznewski tied the game at 1-1. In the fifth, it was Blumenthal sparking the Bobcats' rally once-again with a lead-off double. Herter singled up the middle before Ullrich hit a double-play ball that allowed Blumenthal to sneak home with the go-ahead run. In the sixth, Migani led off with his second home run of the season when he launched a 2-and-0 offering from LIU Brooklyn starter Kevin Needham over the left field wall to give Quinnipiac a 3-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, LIU Brooklyn had the winning run at the plate in the form of DeMarco, who hit into a game-ending double play to seal the Bobcats' sweep of the Blackbirds.
Quinnipiac and LIU Brooklyn will meet in the final game of its four-game set on Sunday, May 5 at 1 p.m. at LIU Field in Brooklyn, N.Y.
