Quinnipiac freshman Justin Thomas (Enfield, Conn.) was named the Northeast Conference Baseball Rookie of the Week as announced by the league office on Monday, Mar. 25, 2013.
Justin Thomas picked up his first career win with a brilliant seven-inning outing in a 5-1 win against Monmouth on Sunday, Mar. 24. Thomas held the Hawks to one run on six hits while striking out four over seven innings. Thomas gave up a double in the first inning, which resulted in the only runner reaching third base over the first five innings.
Thomas didn't allow a hit to the next 16 batters faced, with two batters that were hit by a pitch and one that walked as the only baserunners for Monmouth over the games first five innings. Thomas was touched for a run in the sixth inning, but was able to pitch out of a one-out jam with runners on the corners before exiting the game. To date, Thomas is 1-0 with a 0.75 ERA with one run allowed over 12 innings pitched.
Thomas is the 10th Quinnipiac student-athlete to earn NEC Baseball Rookie of the Week honors as he joins teammate Steffen Herter as Quinnipiac becomes the first team to have two different players earn the award this season. In addition, it is the first time since 2004 that two Quinnipiac players earned the weekly honor in the same season.
