Akron comes into the Chanticleer Classic with an overall record of 1-13 in the 2013 season. UA recently played a midweek, two-game series against The Citadel, which resulted in two losses for Akron. The Zips lost by a score of 7-1 on Tuesday and 9-3 on Wednesday. Sophomore Matt LaRocca has excelled at the plate over the past week in games against USC Upstate and The Citadel. In a span of five games, LaRocca has totaled eight hits, five RBI, two home runs, and three runs scored. The native of Stony Brook, N.Y., has pushed his team-leading batting average to .317, and now also leads the Zips in home runs (two), RBI (six), and slugging percentage (.488). LaRocca is currently riding a three-game hit streak. The Zips' top three batting average leaders - following LaRocca at .317 - are Devan Ahart (.269), Joey Havrilak (.256), and Brady Stewart (.255). Ahart is also in the top three for Akron in hits, doubles, RBI and walks. Sophomore Andrew Fanning gave up his first run out the bullpen this season at Citadel. Fanning allowed his first earned run of the season on Wednesday, when he tossed 1.1 innings pitched with one strikeout.
