Lamacchia Stymies George Washington In Bobcats' 8-3 Season-Opening Win
Quinnipiac senior Derek Lamacchia (White Stone, N.Y.) hurled seven one-hit innings while sophomore Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) was 4-for-5 as the Bobcats topped George Washington, 8-3, in their first game of the 2013 season.
Lamacchia allowed one unearned run in the game, in the fourth inning. Despite keeping the Colonials off the board up until the fourth, Lamacchia put runners on base in the first two innings and was able to pitch out of a couple of jams before pitching a perfect third. In the fourth, a passed ball set-up the Colonials first run of the game and the only one it would tag Lamacchia for. The Bobcats' 2012 strike-out leader, Lamacchia sat down two batters, while walking three and hitting three more.
The Bobcats' offense was active from the start of the game, plating runs in each of the first three innings before putting three runs across in the fifth. Quinnipiac added runs in the sixth and eighth innings as well. Guglietti, coming off an All-Northeast Conference selection as a freshman in 2012, picked up where he left off with a four-hit day. The 6-5 first baseman drove in a run and scored two more. Nic Civale (East Windsor, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run scored. Zak Palmer (Mahwah, N.J.), who also earned All-NEC honors last season, and Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) both drove in two runs apiece. Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) and Tom Donovan (Marshfield, Mass) also had RBI's while Kevin O'Connell (Glastonbury, Conn.) pitched the final two innings in relief for the Bobcats.
In the first inning, it was Civale with the Bobcats' first hit of the season that preceded the squad's first run of the year when he scored on a sacrifice flyball by Palmer. In the second, Donovan was driven in by Ruditys while Donaghue drove in Guglietti in the third to give Quinnipiac a 3-0 lead.
After George Washington plated a run in the fourth, Quinnipiac responded in the fifth. Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) led off the inning with a single before moving to second on a passed ball. After Guglietti singled through the left side, Palmer ripped a single down the left field line to score Migani. Donaghue then laced a double down the line, scoring Guglietti and moving Palmer to third before Donovan bunted him in.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Saturday, Mar. 2 with the second of their three-game set against George Washington. The game is set for a 2 p.m. start at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va.
