Home and Home Against Sacred Heart
The Quinnipiac baseball team will host Sacred Heart on Friday, April 27 at the Quinnipiac Baseball Field at 3 p.m. The Bobcats and Pioneers will then resume their four-game series on Saturday, April 28 with a pair of seven-inning games at the Ballpark at Harbor Yard in Bridgeport, Conn. at 6 p.m. The final game of the series is set for 6 p.m. on Sunday, April 29, also at Harbor Yard.
Scouting The Pioneers
Sacred Heart is currently 14-26 overall and 11-9 in the Northeast Conference, good for a tie for fourth place in the league standings. The Pioneers took three of four games against LIU Brooklyn before losing to Fairfield, 10-5, on Tuesday, April 24. Sacred Heart's offense is powered by John Murphy, Matt Charmello and Dan Perez, all of who are batting over .300 and have driven in at least 20 runs apiece. Murphy leads the team with 12 extra-base hits (7 doubles, four triples and a home run) while also scoring a team-high 26 runs scored. Charmell is hitting .306 with a team-high three home runs and 20 RBI. Perez leads the team with 22 RBI. On the mound, Troy Scribner is 3-5 with a 4.70 ERA with a team-high 42 strikeouts in 53.2 innings pitched. Nick Leiningen has logged a team-high 57.1 innings pitched while posting a 3-4 record.
Seniors Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, Conn.) and Gabe Guerino (Milford, Conn.) sit 2nd and 5th, respectively, as the Toughest to Strikeout In NCAA Division I baseball. Nisson has struck-out just five times in 138 at-bats while Guerino has struck-out four times in 101 at-bats.
In The NEC Ranks
Quinnipiac's top three hitters hold down three of the top 10 spots in the NEC batting category. Zak Palmer ranks 2nd in the NEC in batting average (.375), just ahead of Forrest Dwyer (.372). Kyle Nisson slots into the ninth spot.
That Was A Big Game
Zak Palmer and Kyle Nisson remain the only two players to produce a five-hit game in the Northeast Conference this season as both went a combined 10-for-12 in a 17-3 win against Mount St. Mary's on April 13.
Second Half Surge
In his first 19 collegiate games, walk-on second baseman Forrest Dwyer was 7-for-59 (.119) with two RBI and four runs scored. Since then, Dwyer has reached base safely in 20 straight games, the longest among all players in the Bobcats' line-up, while batting a incredible .463 (31-67) with 12 RBI and seven runs scored. Dwyer also has nine multiple-hit games, including four three-hit performances. To date, Dwyer is tied for the team lead with a .302 (38-126) average with 14 RBI and 13 runs scored.
Strong Up The Middle
Freshman Scott Donaghue currently leads Quinnipiac with 18 RBI. Donaghue drove in just four runs in the first 21 games of the season, while driving in 14 runs in his last 18 games played.
The Other Ullrich
Jesse Ullrich, brother of former Bobcat Ryan Ullrich '10, currently ranks second in the NEC in triples with two. Ullrich is second, to Scott Donaghue, in extra-base hits. Donaghue has nine for the year, while Ullrich has eight.
Hit Dog
Kyle Nisson's 41 hits for the year lead all Bobcats, while his 31 hits in Northeast Conference play lead the league. Zak Palmer is second with 30, while Forrest Dwyer is third with 29.
Inde-Spence-able
Junior Spencer Kane (Wolcott, Conn.) was dominant against Bryant last weekend, despite taking a hard-luck loss. Kane spun eight innings of four-hit baseball before he lost a 1-0 decision in extra innings. Kane struck out three and didn't allow a runner past second base before the eighth inning. For the year, Kane is 3-5 with a career-best 4.32 earned-run average while also ranking sixth nationally with five complete games.
The Bobcats' final seven games of the 2012 season will all be played at the Quinnipiac Baseball Field on the Mt. Carmel Campus of Quinnipiac University. Quinnipiac will host UMass on Tuesday, May 1 before hosting LIU Brooklyn in its final NEC series of the year on May 4-6. They will then wrap-up the regular season on May 11 with a doubleheader against Niagara scheduled for a 12 p.m. start.
Historic Weekend For The Skipper
On Friday, April 13, Quinnipiac head coach Dan "Skip" Gooley won his 500th career win in a 17-3 decision that saw the Bobcats top Mount St. Mary's, 17-3.Gooley's first career win came on April 2, 1977 when the Braves defeated Fairfield, 5-3. Gooley's first home fell on April 14, 1977, when Quinnipiac defeated Barrington College, 18-1. Gooley's 100th career win came at New Hampshire College, 14-3, during the Braves' 1983 campaign. Gooley won his 200th game in 1987 and his 300th while at the University of Hartford. His 400th win came against the University of Hartford, 7-3, on May 4, 2006. The win in the first game of Quinnipiac's doubleheader on Saturday, April 14 gave Gooley 400 career wins at Quinnipiac, making him the third coach in school history to reach the mark along with former athletic director and men's basketball coach Burt Kahn (459) and current men's and women's tennis coach Mike Quitko (481).
