LAKEWOOD, N.J. – The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to Monmouth, 7-3, in the fourth and final game of its Northeast Conference series against the Hawks. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 3-24 overall and 2-14 in the NEC while Monmouth improves to 18-12 overall and 9-3 in conference play.
Forrest Dwyer (Wakefield, R.I.) was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the game while Jesse Ullrich (Orange, Conn.) drove in two runs. Matthew Siciliano (Ardmore, Pa.) pitched six strong innings in relief, holding Monmouth to one unearned run on five this over six innings pitched.
Monmouth used a four-run bottom of the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Ed Martin led off the inning with a double before Jamie Rosenkranz singled to center field. Jake Gronsky then drove in Martin with a single up the middle before Danny Avella's base hit loaded the bases. Chris Perret drew a walk to force Rosenkranz in before Owen Stewart's ground ball to third scored Gronsky. Jon Guida then hit a sacrifice fly to plate another run and give Monmouth a commanding lead.
In the third, Monmouth scored three more runs to take a 7-0 lead. Gronsky led off with a single before Avella doubled to put Gronsky on third. Avella's extra-base hit ended Quinnipiac starter Kevin O'Connell's (Glastonbury, Conn.) afternoon. The sophomore hurler was tagged for six runs on six hits over two innings before being lifted in favor of Siciliano.
Quinnipiac put three runs across in the top of the seventh inning when Zak Palmer (Mahwah, N.J.) singled to lead off the inning. After Scott Donaghue (Marlboro, N.J.) walked and Nic Civale flew out to right field, Mike Blumenthal's (Dix Hills, N.Y.) ground ball to short was misplayed, allowing him to reach first and load the bases. Dwyer then delivered his second hit of the day to score Palmer with the Bobcats first run. After Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) fouled-out to first base, Ullrich singled to center field to score Blumenthal and Donaghue and trim Monmouth's lead to 7-3.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Monday, April 9 when it hosts Connecticut at 3 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Baseball Field. The Bobcats also host Rhode Island on Tuesday, April 10, also at 3 p.m., before hosting Mount St. Mary's for a four-game Northeast Conference series on April 13-15.
