Baseball Falls To Central Connecticut State, 9-3
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to Central Connecticut State, 9-3, in the first game of its four-game, Northeast Conference series against the Blue Devils in New Britain, Conn. With the loss, Quinnipaic drops to 3-17 overall and 2-7 in the NEC while CCSU improves to 12-9 overall and 6-3 in league play.
Quinnipiac senior Gabe Guerino (Milford, Conn.) was 2-for-4 with an RBI while freshman Vin Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) singled to extend his hitting streak against NEC competition to five games. Ray Buckley (Bethel, Conn.) pitched 3 1/3 innings of scoreless, two-hit baseball.
Central Connecticut got on the board early when Lamacchia walked Jake Matuszak to start the inning. After he struck out Mitch Wells, JP Sportman doubled just past the glove of third baseman Zak Palmer (Mahwah, N.J.) to bring Matuszak around with the game's first run. Tyler McIntyre then followed with a homerun to right field to put the Blue Devils on top, 3-0.
Lamacchia settled down from there, pitching through two scoreless innings, including a first-and-third threat in the third in which he induced a pop up to right by Anthony Turgeon before striking out Dylan DelaCruz to end the inning. In the fourth, Central Connecticut plated two more runs after a pair of errors moved runners into scoring position. Danny Hickey scored on a fielding error before Wells delivered a two-out double to right center that scored two runs and put CCSU out in front, 6-0.
In the top of the fifth, Brian Ruditys (Boothwyn, Pa.) reached base with one out when his bouncing ball to third was misplayed. Forrest Dwyer (Wakefield, R.I.) drove Ruditys in with the Bobcats first hit of the game to cut Central Connecticut's lead to 6-1.
In the bottom of the fifth, CCSU led off with a pair of hits by Turgeon and DelaCruz before Mike Washburn reached on a sacrifice bunt that was play by Quinnipiac first baseman Gabe Guerino (Milford, Conn.) over to third. After Lamacchia struck out Hickey and Josh Ingham, Matsuczak drove in a pair of runs before Wells' single to center plate another to give Central Connecticut a 9-1 lead.
Wells' hit knocked Lamacchia out of the game in favor of Ray Buckley (Milford, Conn.). Lamacchia's left after allowing nine runs – six earned – on 10 hits while striking out seven over 4 2/3. Buckley retired the only batter he faced in the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, freshman Vincent Guglietti (East Haven, Conn.) singled one a line drive up the middle before CCSU starter Harry Glynne hit Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, Conn.) and Palmer to load the bases. After Guerino singled to plate Guglietti, Ruditys followed with a deep fly to right to score Nisson and cut the Blue Devils' lead to 9-3.
