Baseball Falls To UConn, 9-0
STORRS, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost a non-conference match-up to the University of Connecticut, 9-0, at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, Conn. Quinnipiac drops to 14-23 on the season while UConn improves to 27-12-1.
Quinnipiac starting pitcher Kyle Birdsall (Orange, Conn.) held Connecticut scoreless through four innings of play, scattering six hits while walking just one batter. Freshman Nick Fabrizio (Peabody, Mass.) came on in the fifth and pitched a perfect inning before finding himself in trouble in the sixth inning when a pair of Quinnipiac errors accounted for two unearned runs.
Senior center fielder Ben Farina (Waterford, Conn.) had a pair of hits in the game, giving him 228 for his career. Farina is now 10 hits shy of tying Ryan Rizzo '07 for the second most hits in program history, and 18 from the Quinnipiac record, currently held by assistant coach Tim Binkoski '07, who totaled 245 hits for his career. Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, Conn.) and Zak Palmer (Mahwah, N.J.) also collected two hits in the Bobcats' loss.
In the seventh, UConn exploded for seven runs to take an 9-0 lead. Quinnipiac reliever Ryan Walsh (Stamford, Conn.) retired L.J. Mazzilli and Tom Verdi to start the inning before the first-year reliever allowed the next four batters to reach base on three walks and a hit. Walsh was credited with four runs allowed. Spencer Kane (Wolcott, Conn.) pitched the final 1/3 of the inning, but a pair of errors allowed three runs - only one of which was earned - to cross. Junior Matthew Siciliano (Ardmore, Pa.) pitched a scoreless eighth inning, allowing one hit.
