Derek Lamacchia (Whitestone, N.Y.) pitched six strong innings for his first victory of the season to improve to 1-1 on the year. Lamacchia held Richmond to one run on four hits over six innings pitched while striking out six. Lamacchia pitched out of a pair of run-threatening situations. Nick Walsh (Stamford, Conn.) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings for his second career save.
Quinnipiac got on the board in the first inning when Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) walked and moved to third base on a fielding off on a Joe Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) ground ball. Migani scored an unearned run on a single to right field by Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, Conn.).
In the third, Migani doubled over the head of Richmond's center fielder. He scored on an RBI-single by Poletsky on a sharp ground ball past the short stop. Poletsky was retired on the play when he attempted to advance to second on the play.
Lamacchia worked out of trouble in each of the first three innings before Richmond struck for a run to cut the Bobcats' lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Lamacchia retired the first two batters he faced in the inning before Spiders catcher Chris Cowell turned on a 1-1 offering from the sophomore hurler and for his first home run of the season as Richmond pulled within a run, 2-1, heading into the fifth.
In the fifth, Quinnipiac struck for four runs to take a 6-1 lead. Kevin O'Connell (Glastonbury, Conn.) reached on a fielder's choice after his ground ball to short retired Mike Blumenthal (Dix Hills, N.Y.), who walked to lead off the inning. Mickey Amanti (Waterford, Conn.) singled to right field to move O'Connell to third before Farina delivered his second hit of the day to drive O'Connell in and give Quinnipiac a two-run lead, 3-1. The hit was Farina's 190th of his career, leaving him 10 hits from becoming the seventh player in Quinnipiac history to reach the 200-hit mark.
After Migani popped out, Poletsky walked to load the bases with two outs for Nisson. Nisson put the ball in play, but Richmond failed to retired a Quinnipiac runner, allowing Amanti to score while Nisson picked up his second RBI of the afternoon. Mike Bartlett (Orange, Conn.) followed with a single to right field, scoring Farina and Poletsky to give the Bobcats a five run lead, 6-1, heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.
Richmond tagged freshman reliever Nick Fabrizio (Peabody, Mass.) for three runs - only one of which was earned - over 1 1/3 innings, as they pulled within two runs in the 8th inning. Walsh came on to slam the door and preserve the win for the Bobcats.
Quinnipiac and Richmond close-out their three-game series on Sunday, March 13 when they face each other for the last time at 1 p.m. at Pitt Field in Richmond, Va.
