Baseball's Mike Bartlett Scores Game-Winning Run Against Richmond As Bobcats Win, 6-5, In 10th Inning
RICHMOND,
Va. - Quinnipiac senior Mike
Bartlett (Orange, Conn.) scored the game-winning run on a wild
pitch in the top of the 10th inning to give the Bobcats a 6-5 win
against the University of Richmond. The win is the Bobcats' third
in their first four games, putting them at 3-1 on the season, while
the Spiders drop to 4-9-2 on the season. Anthony
Cinelli (Wall, N.J.) picked the win in relief.
Bartlett had a big game for the Bobcats, going 3-for-5 with two
runs scored in the win. Freshman Zak
Palmer (Mahwah, N.J.) was 3-for-3 for the day with two RBI. Joe
Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run
scored. Kyle
Birdsall (Orange, Conn.) took a no-decision in his second start
of the year after allowing four runs - three earned - on six hits
over five innings. Andrew
Rinaldi (East Rockaway, N.Y.) pitched two scoreless innings,
giving up three hits and striking out three. Cinelli was actually
tagged for a run after scattering five hits over the final three
innings pitched.
Quinnipiac scored in the top of the first inning when Mickey
Amanti (Waterford, Conn.) and Ben
Farina (Waterford, Conn.) led-off the game with a pair of
singles. After Chris
Migani (Orange, Conn.) grounded into a double play, Poletsky's
single up the middle scored Amanti to give the Bobcats an early 1-0
lead. Richmond finally got to Birdsall in the third inning, pushing
across a pair of runs to take a 2-1 lead.
In the fourth, Palmer's RBI-single scored Kyle
Nisson (Wallingford, Conn.) to tie the game. After a two-run
homer in the bottom of the fifth put Richmond out in front 4-2,
Quinnipiac came-back again, plating two runs in the top of the 6th
to tie the game. Migani was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning,
before being retired at second base when Poletsky reached on a
fielder's choice. Nisson was hit by a pitch to put two runners on
base before Bartlett reached on a fielding error that scored
Poletsky to make the score 4-3. Palmer slapped another single up
the middle to score Nisson and tie the game, 4-4.
In the eighth, Bartlett led off the inning with his second hit of
the day. Palmer sacrificed Bartlett over to second before Gabe
Guerino (Milford, Conn.) reached on error, allowing Bartlett to
move to third. Freshman Mike
Blumenthal's (Dix Hill, N.Y.) fly ball to center field proved
deep enough to score Bartlett and give Quinnipiac a 5-4 lead. A
pair of Richmond hits in the bottom half of the inning resulted in
a game-tying run before the game ultimately went to extra
innings.
In the 10th, Bartlett doubled down the right field line and then
moved to third base on a passed ball, and then scored what would
stand up to be the game-winning run, on a passed ball. In the
bottom half of the inning, Cinelli retired the first batter he
faced before giving up a double. He managed to pitch out of the jam
to earn the win.
Quinnipiac and Richmond play again on Saturday, March 12 at Pitt
Field in Richmond, Va. at 2 p.m.
