The Quinnipiac baseball team, fresh off a 2-1 weeked against
Marshall and Ball State in Myrtle Beach, S.C., will head to
Richmond, Virg. to take on the University of Richmond in a
three-game series schedule for Friday, March 11 through Sunday,
March 13. Friday's game is set for a 3 p.m. start while Saturday
and Sunday's games are schedule for 1 p.m. Richmond enters the
series with a record of 4-8-1.
Scouting The Spiders
Jacob Meyers leads the Spiders with a .396 average, while his 21
hits are also a team-high, which also includes six doubles...Phil
Ruzbarsky slides into the two-spot at .359 with nine runs
scored...Mike Mergenthaler is hitting .309 with two homeruns, five
RBI and a team-high 10 runs scored while Robby Massar's eight RBI's
are a team-best.
Akadema Northeast Conference Player of the
Week
Ben Farina was named the 19th Quinnipiac player in NEC
history to take home an Akadema Northeast Conference Player of the
Week honor. Farina strung together three straight multiple-hit
performances on his way to a .429 (6-14) average for the weekend.
Farina notched two hits, stole a base, and scored a run in each of
the three contests.
Batman
Farina, Quinnipiac's active hit leader, pushed his career total to
187, leaving him 13 shy of becoming the seventh player in
Quinnipiac history to reach the 200-hit mark. He is currently
ranked eighth at Quinnipiac all-time and sixth at the Division I
level.
Fresh(man) Arms
Freshman Ryan Walsh picked up his first career save after pitching
a perfect ninth inning in the Bobcats 5-4 win against Ball State on
Saturday. Walsh cruised through the ninth inning, striking out two
of the three batters he faced.
Another One
Classmate Nick Fabrizio also made his collegiate debut against Ball
State. The first-year right-handed pitcher gave up one run on two
hits over three innings pitched
No-swing-and-missin' Nisson
Kyle Nisson became the first Bobcat this season with a four-hit
day, going 4-for-4 with two RBI against Ball State in a 5-4 win.
For the weekend, Nisson batted .600 (6-10) while also walking twice
and getting hit twice by a pitch for a team-best .714 on-base
percentage.
Doubleplay Duo
Chris Migani and Mickey Amanti both drove in three runs on the
weekend. Migani batted .400 (4-10) for the South Carolina trip,
while also drawing four walks for a .533 on-base percentage.
Good
Opener Mick
Amanti was a beast in the Bobcats' season-opener, driving in three
runs while scoring two more in an 8-3 win.
Experienced Hurlers
Kyle Birdsall (Orange, Conn.) picked up the win in the Bobcats
season opener while Anthony Cinelli (Wall, N.J.) picked up the
save. Birdsall was tagged for three runs in the second inning, only
two of which were earned. Birdsall picked up the victory after he
scattered six hits over six innings pitched while striking out
five.
2011
Northeast Conference Baseball Preseason Coaches' Poll
The Quinnipiac University baseball team was picked to finish
seventh in the 2011 Northeast Conference Baseball Preseason
Coaches' Poll, released by the NEC office on Wednesday, Feb. 16.
The Bobcats will return 19 players from last year's roster that
finished 2010 at 14-39 overall and 13-19 in NEC play.
