Baseball's Mickey Amanti Named Akadema/NEC Co-Player Of The Week

HAMDEN, Conn. - Quinnipiac baseball junior Mickey Amanti (Waterford, Conn.) was named the Akadema/Northeast Conference Co-Player of the Week, along with Central Connecticut's Pat Epps, after leading the Bobcats to three wins in their four-game series against Long Island this past weekend. Amanti hit a gaudy .714 in the series with 10 hits in 14 at-bats. Amanti is the 18th Quinnipiac baseball player to win the NEC weekly award in the program's Division I history.

Amanti opened the week against Rhode Island with an 0-for-4 showing, failing the reach base in the Bobcats' out of conference loss to the Rams. He responded by coming within a triple of the cycle in the Bobcats' 9-5 series opening win against the Blackbirds on Friday. Amanti belted his second homerun of the season as part of a 4-for-5 day that saw the junior shortstop drive in four runs, and scored two more, as he had a hand in six of Quinnipiac's nine runs in the game.

Nearly impossible to keep off the bases, Amanti amassed a 1.071 on-base percentage while driving in six runs against the Blackbirds in the four-game set. On Saturday, following a 9-0 loss in the first game of the doubleheader, Amanti was 3-for-5 with two RBI, both coming on a double that blew the game open in a 5-0 win in the nightcap. In the series finale, an 11-10 Bobcats win, Amanti singled, and also reached on a walk, and scored two runs. He also put together an errorless week in the field for Quinnipiac in 19 chances at short.

For the year, Amanti is third in batting average (.314), doublehs (seven), slugging percentage (.438) and second in hits (33), runs scored (17), RBI (17), homeruns (two) and on-base percentage (.392).

Quinnipiac returns to action on Tuesday, April 20 when they travel to the University of Hartford for a non-conference match-up at 3 p.m. They will then host New Haven County rival Yale University on Wednesday, April 21 at 3 p.m. at the Quinnipiac Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn. The Bobcats close-out the week in New Britain, Conn. when they take on Central Connecticut State in a four-game Northeast Conference series set to run from Friday through Sunday.
