Bobcats And Rams
The Quinnipiac University baseball team will host the University of
Rhode Island in a non-conference match-up at the Quinnipiac
Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn. on Tuesday, April at 3 p.m.
Quinnipiac enters the game with an overall record of 3-21 while
Rhode Island is 14-14 to date.
Katie Vashon Day
Sunday, April 18, 2010 will be Katie Vashon Day at the Quinnipiac
Baseball Field. Her father, Jim Vashon, will be throwing out the
ceremonial first pitch while Katie's sorority, Phi Sigma Sigma,
will be holding a bake sale to raise funds for the Katie Vashon
Endowment at Camp Sunshine in Casco, Maine. The money raised allows
for two children suffering from chronic illnesses and their
families to spend one week each summer at this camp which was held
close to Katie's heart.
Katie Vashon was a senior from Hermon, Maine who worked in the Quinnipiac University Sports Information Department for four years before she suddenly passed away after a brief battle with leukemia in 2005. Katie was majoring in public relations and belonged to the Phi Sigma Sigma sorority as well as the School of Communications honorary society Lambda Pi Eta.
Big
Hitters
In four games last week, Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) and Joe
Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) both batted .500 (8-16). Migani
connected for his first homerun of the season against Brown on
Tuesday, April 6, a two-run homer early in the game.
Breaking Out
Migani entered the week hitting .156 in 14 games played and managed
one hit in his previous 18 at-bats over the five games heading into
the game against Brown. The sophomore infielder broke out in a big
way, posting a 3-for-5 showing against the Bears that include two
runs scored. He was then 2-for-4 against Dartmouth on Wednesday,
April 7 for a 2-for-4 day against Fairfield at home on Saturday,
April 10. For the week, he led all Bobcats with a .750 slugging
percentage, while he and Poletsky tied for the team lead in average
(.500), hits (8) and on-base percentage.
Joe-Po
Joe Poletsky had three multiple-hit games in the four-game week to
push his team-leading multi-hit outings to 10 games. The junior
third baseman was 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI's before a 2-for-3
showing with a double against Dartmouth. He was also 3-for-4
against Fairfield on Sunday.
Hit
Leader
For the year, Poletsky is hitting .309 (29-94) with five doubles,
10 RBI and nine runs scored while his 29 hits lead the Bobcats.
M-I-C...K-E-Y
Mickey Amanti (Waterford, Conn.) also entered the game against
Brown in a similar slump to Migani's, with three hits in his last
17 at-bats over the previous six games. In four games last week,
Amanti batted .438 (7-16) with three multiple-hit outings and hit
in each game. Against Dartmouth, Amanti was 2-for-5 with his first
homerun of the season. He followed that showing up with two-hit
games against Fairfield on Saturday and Sunday.
Welcome Aboard Mick!
Mickey Amanti picked up his 100th career hit against Brown this
week. Amanti became the 54th player in Quinnipiac history and the
26th in the Bobcats' Division I history to record 100 career hits.
Amanti is the third Quinnipiac player to reach the 100-hit mark
this season, and the fourth active player, joining Ben Farina
(Waterford, Conn.), who recorded his 100th hit last season, as well
as Brian Monack (Branford, Conn.) and Joe Poletsky (Riverside,
Conn.).
Power Numbers
Brian Monack drove in a team-high five runs last week, pushing his
team-leading RBI total to 18. Monack also leads the team in
slugging percentage (.437) and walks (17) while his .394 on-base
percentage is second on the team. Monack also leads the team with
six multiple-RBI games.
Gabe
Ruth?
Gabe Guerino (Milford, Conn.) and Amanti are tied for the longest
active hitting streak (six games) on the Bobcats roster. Migani and
Poletsky sit behind them with five-game hitting streaks.
Respect The Streak
Freshman Alex Russow (Milford, Conn.) pitched three innings of
scoreless ball against Fairfield. Last week's Akadema/NEC Rookie
and Pitcher of the Week now has a 14-inning scoreless streak over
his last three appearances.
