RALEIGH, N.C. - The
Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to North Carolina State,
17-7, in the final game of a three-game set against the Wolfpack in
Raleigh, N.C. With the loss, the Bobcats drop to 0-3 overall while
NC State improves to 10-1. Junior Mickey Amanti (Waterford, Conn.)
drove in three of the Bobcats seven runs as part of a three-hit
afternoon.
NC
State posted seven runs over the first three innings, scoring twice
in the 1st and 2nd before a three-run
3rd inning gave the Wolfpack a 7-0 lead. In the top of
the 4th inning, Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) walked with
one out before Jeff Carino (Greenwich, Conn.) singled up the middle
to move Migani to second base. After a pitching change, Amanti
drove home Migani with the Bobcats' first run of the game with a
single to center field. After Mike Bartlett (Milford, Conn.) flew
out and Ryan Ullrich (Woodbridge, Conn.) walked, Ben Farina
(Waterford, Conn.) drove home Amanti and Bartlett with a two-run
single. Ullrich scored on a wild pitch to make the score 7-4
heading to the bottom of the 4th inning.
While NC State scored
in the bottom of the inning, as well as three more runs in the
bottom of the 6th, Quinnipiac managed just four more base runners
over the next four innings. On the mound, Brian Monack (Branford,
Conn.) was tagged for eight runs on eight hits over four innings
before being lifted in favor of Tim O'Sullivan (Upper Saddle River,
N.J.). Neil Mammale (Madison, Conn.) gave up one unearned run in an
inning worked. Monack had a pair of hits at the plate, while also
scoring a run.
In
the top of the 9th, trailing 12-7, the Bobcats scored
three times to move within three runs of NC State. Monack led off
the inning with a double to left field before Joe Poletsky
(Riverside, Conn.) and Tom Donovan (Marshfield, Mass.),
pinch-hitting for Gabe Guerino, walked to load the bases. After
Carino drove-home Monack, Amanti
singled up the middle, scoring Poletsky and Donovan.
Quinnipiac returns to
action on Monday, March 8 when they take on Duke University in the
first game of a two-game set at 3 p.m. at the USA Baseball Complex
in Cary, N.C.
