RALEIGH, N.C. - Freshman Ray Buckley drove in two runs with a pinch-hit single in the top of the 9th, as the Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to North Carolina State, 14-3, in the second game of a three-game set in Raleigh, N.C. Buckley's single came in his first collegiate at-bat. Quinnipiac is 0-2 on the year while NC State improves to 9-1.
NC State's Jack Buchanan spun six innings of four-hit, scoreless baseball while striking out seven Bobcats in the process. For Quinnipiac, Todd DeFrancesco (North Haven, Conn.) took the loss after giving up nine runs - four earned - on five hits over 3 1/3. Freshmen George Dummar (Branford, Conn.) gave up four runs in 2/3 of an inning pitched, while Kevin Castodio held NC State to one run on two hits over three innings.
Junior Joe Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) was 3-for-4 in the Bobcats' loss. The third-year infielder is now 5-for-8 to open the 2010 season. Sophomore Catcher Kyle Nisson (Milford, Conn.) also drove in a run with a single to center field in the 7th inning.
North Carolina State struck early, plating two runs in the 2nd and 3rd innings. In the 4th, The Wolfpack exploded for nine runs to take a 13-0 lead. Another Wolfpack run in the 5th gave NC State a 14-0 lead through five innings of play.
Quinnipiac closes out its three-game series in Raleigh, N.C. when they take the field at 1 p.m. against NC State at Doak Field.
