AMHERST, Mass. The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to the University of Massachusetts, 13-5, in the Bobcats' final non-conference game of the 2009 season. The loss puts Quinnipiac at 15-33 overall. Junior centerfielder Brian Monack (Branford, Conn.) was 2-for-2 with a pair of doubles and two RBI. Ryan Ullrich (Woodbridge, Conn.) was the only other Bobcat with multiple hits with a 2-for-4 at the plate with two runs scored.
Massachusetts struck first, scoring in the bottom of the first inning when Jim Macdonald tripled home Adam Tempesta with the game's first run to give the Minutemen a 1-0 lead. They then tacked on six more runs in the bottom of the 2nd inning, keyed by Tempesta's grand slam. Brian Baudinet also homered in the inning as UMass took a 7-0 lead.
In the top of the 3rd, Quinnipiac plated their first run of the game when Ullrich singled up the middle. After Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) flew out to left field, Bryn Doyle (Manchester, N.H.) and Monack were hit by a pitch, loading the bases for Gabe Guerino (Milford, Conn.). Guerino hit a fly ball to left field, deep enough to score Ullrich and put Quinnipiac on the board, 7-1. UMass responded in the bottom half of the inning when Matt Gebman's fly ball scored Mike Gebman to increase Massachusetts' lead to seven runs, 8-1.
In the 5th, Ullrich led off the inning with a bunt, beating out the throw for a single. After Migani flew out to center, Doyle delivered with a single to left field, advancing Ullrich to second base. Monack followed with a double to left-center field, scoring Ullrich and Doyle to move Quinnipiac to 8-3. After Guerino grounded out for the second out of the inning, Joe Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) delivered with his team-leading 28th RBI of the season to score Monack as Quinnipiac pulled to within four runs at 8-4.
The Bobcats were held scoreless over the next three innings, while the Minutemen pushed across five more runs to take a 13-4 lead. Tyler Turgeon's (Norwich, Conn.) RBI-single in the bottom of the 9th drove in Migani with Quinnipiac's final run of the game.
Andrew Rinaldi (East Rockaway, N.Y.) took the loss for Quinnipiac, his first decision of the season, to drop to 0-1. Rinaldi was hit for eight runs on six hits over three innings. Anthony Cinelli (Wall, N.J.) pitched three innings in relief, giving up two runs, while Mike Oskandy (Bethel, Conn.) and Todd DeFrancesco (North Haven, Conn.) threw the final two innings, yielding three more runs to the UMass offense.
Quinnipiac will close out its 2009 season this weekend when they travel to Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on Long Island University.
