Baseball Falls To UConn, 14-4

STORRS, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to the University of Connecticut, 14-4, in a non-conference match-up at J.O. Christian Field in Storrs, Conn. Quinnipiac drops to 10-24 overall while UConn improves to 22-16.

UConn starter Dave Fischer picked up the win on the mound, while Quinnipiac's Kyle Birdsall (Orange, Conn.) dropped to 1-3 on the season. Quinnipiac was held to five hits in the loss.

The Bobcats put two runs on the board in the top of the 1st inning when freshman Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) singled to right-center field to start the game. After Mickey Amanti (Waterford, Conn.) struck out, Migani stole second base before Brian Monack (Branford, Conn.) walked. Both runners moved up a base when Fischer was called for a balk. Fischer then threw a wild pitch, allowing Migani and Monack to score as the Bobcats took an early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom half of the 1st, Huskies senior Dale Brannon singled to right field with one out. Matt Burnett singled to right field to move Brannon to second base. George Springer then connected for a three-run homer to give UConn a 3-2 lead. Brannon also hit a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 2nd to score Joe Pavone as the Huskies took a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the 4th, Matt Burnett singled to right center to score Pierre LePage as UConn took a 5-2 lead. Springer followed with a single through the left side of the infield for his fourth RBI of the day, before a Peter Fatse double cleared the bases to give Connecticut an 8-2 lead.

The double by Fatse ended the day for Quinnipiac starter Kyle Birdsall (Orange, Conn.). Birdsall was roughed up for nine runs on 10 hits over 3 1/3. Rinaldi gave up a hit to the first batter he faced, Pavone, to center field to score Fatse, who moved to third on a ground-out.

In the top of the 5th, freshman Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, Conn.) reached on a throwing error by the Huskies' third baseman. Migani then dropped down a sacrifice bunt, moving Nisson to third base. Amanti then crushed a triple to left-center field, scoring Nisson to move Quinnipiac to within six runs, 9-3. UConn scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to push their lead to 12-3.

Quinnipiac's last run of the day came on a solo homerun by Joe Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.). Poletsky's homerun was his second of the season for his team-leading 18th RBI of the season. UConn's John Andreoli singled home a pair of runs to cap the 14-4 win.
