Baseball Falls To Central Connecticut State, 11-7
HAMDEN, Conn. The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost the fourth and final game of its Northeast Conference series against Central Connecticut State University, 11-7, in a game played at the Quinnipiac Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn. Quinnipiac goes to 10-23 overall and 3-9 in the NEC while CCSU improves to 16-12 overall and 6-5 in conference play.
CCSU's Derek Roberts picked up the win to improve to 3-1 while Chris Chagnon converted his third save of the season. For Quinnipiac, Joe Duffy (Commack, N.Y.) took the loss, dropping to 1-6 on the season. At the plate, Mickey Amanti (Waterford, Conn.) was 2-for-5 with a two-run homerun while Mike Marmo (Brookville, N.Y.) and Boback Emamian (Cheshire, Conn.) also drove in two runs. Bryn Doyle (Manchester, N.H.), Brian Monack (Branford, Conn.) and Ben Farina (Waterford, Conn.) all had two hits for the Bobcats. For Central Connecticut, Pat Epps was 5-for-6 with three doubles and five RBI.
Central Connecticut State jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 3rd inning when Casey Walko singled with one out before advancing to second base on a passed ball. Anthony Scialdone then ground out to first, moving Walko to third base. He would score an unearned run on a bloop-single to right field by Pat Epps to give the Blue Devils the one-run lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) and Bryn Doyle (Manchester, N.H.) both walked with one out. Migani scored on a single to left field by Marmo to tie the game at 1-1.
CCSU re-took the lead in the top of the 5th inning when Scialdone walked to lead off the Blue Devils' at-bats, followed by a double down the left field line by Epps. Epps hit it a bouncing ball over the glove of Doyle at third base. Both runs scored on a single by Tommy Meade to give CCSU a 3-1 lead. Kyle Zarotney then reached on a bunt that he beat out for a base hit. Parker then hit a ground ball through the right side of the infield, scoring Meade as Zarotney moved to third to give Central Connecticut State a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom half of the inning, Quinnipiac responded when Doyle ripped a single through the left side of the infield. Roberts was then called for a balk, moving Doyle to second base. He slid over to third on a ground out by Brian Monack (Branford, Conn.) before Marmo drove in his second run of the day to make the score 4-2.
In the top of the 8th, Duffy gave up a single to Sean Allaire before Walko dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move Allaire to second. Duffy was then relieved by Monack, who moved from center field to the mound. Duffy allowed four runs , three earned, on a 11 hits over 7 1/3 innings while striking out three. After Scialdone reached on an error, Epps doubled down the left field line to score Allaire. Scialdone scored on a ground-out by Tri to give CCSU a 6-2 lead. Epps then stole third and crossed home on a wild pitch as the Blue Devils pushed their lead to 7-2.
In the bottom of the inning, Joe Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) led off the inning with a double to left-center field. After Farina ground out to third, Amanti singled to shallow right field, moving Poletsky to third. With Emamian pinch hitting for Ryan Ullrich (Guilford, Conn.), Central lifted Roberts for Chris Chagnon. Roberts allowed two runs on eight hits over 7 1/3 while striking out eight.
Emamian lined a full count fastball from Chagnon off the base of the left field wall, scoring Poletsky and Amanti to cut into the Blue Devils' lead, 7-4, as he advanced to third base on the throw to the plate. Emamian came in to score on a deep flyball to left field by Migani as Quinnipiac pulled within two runs at 7-5. Doyle followed with a single to right field before Monack hit the first pitch he saw up the middle to move Doyle to third base.
In the top of the 9th, CCSU struck for four more runs. Zarotney walked to lead off the inning before Sean Parker was hit by a pitch. After Allaire reached on a fielder's choice, retiring Parker, Walker singled through to right field, scoring Zarotney. Scialdone was then hit with the first pitch of his at-bat, followed by a double to right-center fielder that scored Walko and Scialdone to give the Blue Devils an 11-5 lead.
In the bottom of the 9th, Poletsky walked with one out before Farina lined out to second base. With two outs , Amanti connected for his second homerun of the season, a towering drive to left-center field that made the score 11-7.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Monday, April 20 when it heads to Storrs, Conn. to take on the University of Connecticut in a non-conference game slated for a 3 p.m. start at J.O. Christian Field.
