Baseball Loses To Holy Cross, 3-1

HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to Holy Cross, 3-1, in a non-conference match up played at the Quinnipiac Baseball Field in Hamden, Conn. The loss snaps a three-game win streak for Quinnipiac as they drop to 3-11. Holy Cross improves to 4-13 on the year.

Mike Marmo (Brookville, N.Y.) was 2-for-4 in the game, while also driving in the Bobcats' only run. Holy Cross' Matt Shapiro picked up the win after holding the Bobcats to one run on six hits over 7 2/3 innings.

Holy Cross' John Sills doubled in the first inning before Quinnipiac starter Duffy walked Eric Oxford to put two runners on base with one out. Duffy struck out the next batters, Jake Gorman and Tim Hughes, to end the Holy Cross threat. After Oxford reached base, Duffy retired the next 12 batters heading into the fifth inning.

In the fifth, Duffy gave up a lead-off single to Bill Cupelo before getting Chris Sintetos to ground out to first base and striking out Ed Bleily. Brendan McCrae then drove a Duffy pitch to deep right-center field, scoring Cupelo and putting the Crusaders out in front, 1-0. After Matt Perry followed with a single, Sills then slapped a ground ball through the left side of the infield to score McCrae and give Holy Cross a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the seventh, Duffy retired the first two Holy Cross batters he faced before Matt Perry hit a towering drive down the left-field line that dropped in just short of the fence for a double. Sills delivered his second RBI single in as many at-bats to score Perry and give Holy Cross a 3-0 lead. After Duffy walked Oxford, he was lifted in favor of junior Mike Oskandy (Bethel, Conn.). Duffy's day ended after giving up three runs on eight hits while walking two and striking out five. Oskandy walked Gorman to load the bases with two outs. He then induced a ground ball by Hughes to first base to end the inning.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Ben Farina (Waterford, Conn.) doubled down the left field line to start the inning. Holy Cross starter Matt Shapiro then retired Anes Koummal (Stamford, Conn.) and Monack before he was lifted in favor of Ryan George.
