DURHAM, N.C. The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to Duke University, 10-4, in a game played at Jack Coombs Field in Durham, N.C. The Bobcats' loss is their ninth straight to open the season while Duke improves to 9-4. The Blue Devils' Eric Pfisterer picked up the win after holding Quinnipiac scoreless over 4 2/3 in relief while scattering three hits and striking out six.
Ben Farina (Watertown, Conn.) hit his first homerun of the season and fifth of his career in the second inning. After Anes Koummal (Stamford, Conn.) walked to lead off the second, Tyler Turgeon (Norwich, Conn.) doubled to center field to score Koummal to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead. Turgeon moved to third on a wild pitch before Farina's towering homerun to center field put Quinnipiac out in front, 3-0.
The Bobcats struck again in the third inning when Jeff Carino (Greenwich, Conn.) walked with one out and moved to second on a single to right field by Bobak Emamian (Cheshire, Conn.). Koummal then hit a line drive to left field to score Carino and boost Quinnipiac's lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Duke finally got to Quinnipiac starter Todd DeFrancesco (North Haven, Conn.). DeFrancesco had a solid day, allowing three hits over 4 2/3 while giving up four runs, three of which were unearned. DeFrancesco had not given up a hit before the fifth inning and an error by the Quinnipiac defense allowed three runs to score. DeFrancesco was lifted in favor of Chris Gloor (Bay Shore, N.Y.). Gloor gave up a two-run single that allowed a pair of DeFrancesco's unearned runs to score as Duke evened the score at 4-4 heading into the sixth.
In the sixth, Nate Freiman's lead-off double came back to haunt Gloor, who then gave up back-to-back hits to Jake Lemmerman and Will Piwnica-Worms to score Freiman and give the Blue Devils the lead. Gloor was relieved by Andy Mayer (Trumbull, Conn.), who was hit for two runs in 2/3 innings pitched. Bobcat freshman Anthony Cinelli (Wall, N.J.) pitched the final two innings in relief, allowing one run on three hits while striking out two.
Farina ended the day at 2-for-5 with two RBI off his homerun, while Bryn Doyle (Manchester, N.H.) and Emamian also recorded hits.
