CHARLESTON, S.C. The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to The Citadel, 15-1, in a non-conference match-up played at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park in Charleston, S.C. The loss drops Quinnipiac to 0-7 on the season while The Citadel improves to 5-6 on the year.
Quinnipiac sophomore Ben Farina (Waterford, Conn.) opened the game with his team-leading eighth hit of the season. Farina was retired attempting to steal second base before The Citadel's TJ Clarkson retired Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) and Bryn Doyle (Manchester, N.H.) to end the inning.
The Citadel struck for four runs in each of the first two innings, and again in the bottom of the 4th inning as they jumped out to a 12-0 lead. The Bulldogs' 2-through-4 hitters combined for 11 runs on 11 hits over the first four innings. The Citadel tacked on two runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to jump out to a 14 run lead.
The Citadel chased Quinnipiac starter Joe Duffy (Commack, N.Y.) after four innings after the 6-3 righty gave up 12 runs nine earned on 12 hits. He was relieved in favor of Joe Cesarini (Garden City, N.Y.). The Citadel's Clarkson left after the 5th inning as the pitcher of record after holding Quinnipiac scoreless on five hits. Matt Reifsnider relieved Clarkson in the top of the 6th.
In the top of the 7th, senior outfielder Bobak Emamian (Cheshire, Conn.) delivered his second hit of the day, a double over the glove of The Citadel's first baseman. He put the Bobcats on the board for the first time on the day when pinch-hitter Gabe Guerino (Milford, Conn.) went the opposite direction and slapped a base hit to left field to score Emamian.
In the 8th, Migani lined an 0-and-2 pitch to center field before moving to third base on a double by the right field line by Doyle to put two runners in scoring position. Freshman Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, Conn.) hit a line drive to right field that was caught by Brian Shubsda, who followed with a strong throw to the plate to prevent Migani from tagging up. Reifsnider then struck out Jeff Carino (Greenwich, Conn.) looking to end the Bobcats' threat.
Andrew Rinaldi (East Rockaway, N.Y.) came on in relief of Cesarini for the bottom of the 8th. Cesarini was tagged for two runs on four hits over three innings pitched. The Citadel's Grant Richard led off the inning with a single through the right side of the infield. After Rinaldi got Sid Fallaw to fly out to right field, David Greene tripled off the left field wall, scoring Richard and pushing the Bulldog's lead to 15-1. Rinaldi struck out Johnny Dangerfield for the second out of the inning, and William Ladd grounded out to third base to end the inning.
The Bobcats went in order in the top of the 9th as junior right handed pitcher Raymond Copenhaver retired the first two batters he faced before being lifted for Zach Garrett. Garrett got Anes Koummal (Stamford, Conn.) to ground out to short to end the game.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Tuesday, March 10 when they square off against the College of Charleston at Patriots Point Field in Charleston, S.C. at 5 p.m.
