Baseball Drops Third Game Of Series To Georgia, 7-2

ATHENS, Ga. – The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost to Georgia, 7-2, in a game played at Foley Field in Athens, Ga. The nationally ranked No. 2 Bulldogs took all three games of the series to improve to 12-0 on the season while Quinnipiac opens their 2009 campaign at 0-6.

In the 2nd inning, Mike Marmo (Brookville, N.Y.) led off the inning with a single to left field. Senior Bryn Doyle (Manchester, N.H.) followed with a two-run homerun to put the Bobcats out in front 2-0. The lead was the first of the three-game series against the Bulldogs and stood until the bottom of the 4th inning. Doyle and Marmo would provide the only offense on the afternoon for the Bobcats. Doyle was 1-for-3 while Marmo was 2-for-4 .

Georgia pushed a run across in the 3rd and the 4th innings to tie the game at 2-2. In the 3rd, Michael Demperio doubled with one out to right field and scored on a single to right by Rich Pothyress. In the 4th, Joey Lewis led off the inning with a solo homerun to tie the game.

In the 5th, Demperio, Colby May and Pothyress strung together consecutive hits as Demperio crossed the plate on May's single. After Lewis walked to load the bases, Chase Davidson reached on a fielder's choice to score May. Miles Starr's single scored Pothyress to cap the Bulldogs' scoring for the day.

Bobcats' starter Mike Oskandy (Bethel, Conn.) threw six innings, allowing seven runs on 11 hits while striking out five. Freshman Anthony Cinelli (Wall, N.J.) throw the final two innings, holding the Georgia hitless over the stretch. Cinelli pitched efficiently, inducing six ground balls to close out the game.

Quinnipiac will head to Charleston, S.C. on Monday, March 9 to take on the Citadel in a non-conference match-up at 6 p.m.
