Baseball Drops Season Opener, 11-10, To Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. The Quinnipiac University baseball team lost their 2009 season-opener, 11-10, to the University of Maryland in a non-conference match-up at Shipley Field in College Park, Md. Quinnipiac opens the year a 0-1 while Maryland improves to 2-4 on the young season. Quinnipiac led 10-9 heading into the bottom of the 9th inning. A two-out Terrapin double scored a pair of runs as Maryland walked-off with the win.
Joe Duffy (Commack, N.Y.) took the loss for the Bobcats, allowing five runs on 10 hits while striking out seven over five innings pitched in relief. At the plate, Ben Farina (Waterford, Conn.) and Mike Marmo (Brookville, N.Y.) had three hits apiece, while Marmo led a list of four Bobcats, including Bobak Emamian (Cheshire, Conn.), Joe Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) and Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) with two RBI.
Mickey Amanti (Waterford, Conn.) put the Bobcats out in the front, scoring from second base on a Bryn Doyle (Manchester, N.H.) single to center field to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Amanti walked and advanced to second on a passed ball.
Maryland struck for three runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning on a three-run homerun by Mike Murphy. Quinnipiac starter Chris Gloor (Bay Shore, N.Y.) walked the first two batters of the inning before retiring the next two batters. Murphy's homerun was his first of the year. Murphy also doubled one of Maryland's three runs in the 4th inning as the Terrapins took a 6-1 lead after four innings of play. Gloor was lifted after 3 2/3 in favor of senior Joe Duffy (Commack, N.Y.). Gloor allowed six runs on six hits, while walking four.
The Bobcats chipped away at the Maryland lead, scoring three runs in the top of the 5th and four runs in the 6th. In the 5th, Ben Farina (Waterford, Conn.) started the hit parade with a double down the left field line with one out. Amanti flew out to right field, moving Farina to third base. After Doyle was hit by a pitch, Bobak Emamian singled up the middle, scoring Farina and moving Doyle to second. Mike Marmo (Brookville, N.Y.) singled to load the bases before sophomore Joe Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) singled through the right side of the infield to score Emamian and Doyle.
In the 6th, freshmen Gabe Guerino (Milford, Conn.) and Kyle Nisson (Wallingford, Conn.) led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After Farina stuck out, Amanti singled up the middle, scoring Guerino as Nisson moved to third. Doyle then walked to load the bases before Emamian also walked to put Quinnipiac within a run of the Terrapins, 6-5. Marmo's double to right field scored Doyle and Amanti to give Quinnipiac a 8-6 lead.
Maryland retook the lead in the bottom of the 7th inning when Gerry Spessard doubled to lead off the inning. Dan Benick followed with a double of his own, bringing Spessard around with the tying run, 7-7. Curtis Lazar also doubled to drive Benick home and give Maryland an 8-7 lead.
In the 8th, Quinnipiac took a 10-8 lead when freshman Chris Migani (Orange, Conn.) singled through the middle of the infield to score Marmo and Emamian.
Maryland pulled within a run in the bottom of the 8th on a Jensen Pupa homerun. In the bottom of the 9th, Tyler Buran led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield. After Benick dropped down a sacrifice bunt, Duffy struck out Matthew Murakami for the second out of the inning. A.J. Casario then singled down the third base line, moving Buran to third base. David Poutier then delivered with a two-out double to right-center field, scoring Buran with the tying run and Casario with the winning run.
Quinnipiac and Maryland will resume their three-game series on Saturday, Feb. 28 with a doubleheader set for 11 a.m. Both teams were originally scheduled to play single games on Saturday and Sunday, but impending poor weather pushed Sunday's game to Saturday afternoon.
