Dear Student Athletes and Parents –

Effective August 1, 2009, the NCAA will begin stricter enforcement of its medical exceptions policy. This policy is used for athletes who use various medications to treat various illnesses, conditions and/or disorders that would otherwise fall under the banned substances categories outlined by the NCAA. Specifically, the NCAA will be enforcing stricter guidelines regarding exceptions made for athletes who utilize medications often used in the treatment of Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Athletes who currently use stimulants such as Ritalin or Adderall to treat their ADD/ADHD will be required to complete the medical exception process should they have a positive drug test. As part of this process, ALL athletes utilizing these medications (and any other substance used to treat these disorders that fall under the band substance category) are required to provide the Athletic Training staff at Quinnipiac University with various forms of documentation from a professional with experience in assessing ADD/ADHD (i.e. family physician).

ALL athletes using these medications (regardless of whether or not a previous exception has been made) have the responsibility to complete the following:

  • Notify the Athletic Training Staff at QU of their use of stimulants to treat ADD/ADHD
  • Provide the Athletic Training Staff at QU with documentation of the diagnosis of the condition
  • Provide the Athletic Training Staff at QU with documentation from the prescribing physician explaining the course of treatment and the current prescription

Further detail regarding how to accurately complete each of the above bullets can be found at the websites listed at the bottom of this letter -OR- within the attached PDF file.

Please note – Formal assessment tools/techniques are required as part of the diagnosis. A physician CANNOT simply say an athlete has ADD/ADHD and write a prescription. Additionally, the NCAA does NOT require any of this information to be sent to them unless they specifically ask for it – Do NOT send any of your documentation to the NCAA at this time.

ALL documentation must be submitted to the Quinnipiac University Athletic Training Staff NO LATER THAN JULY 31, 2012. If you have any questions or need assistance throughout this process please feel free to contact any member of the Quinnipiac University Athletic Training Staff at the number provided at the top of this letter. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
