Matthew Peca and Brittany McQuain Named Quinnipiac's March Athletes of the Month

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac men’s ice hockey sophomore Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) and women’s basketball junior Brittany McQuain (Independence, Mo.) were named the Male and Female Athletes of the Month for the month of March, announced on Wednesday, April 3, 2013.

Sophomore Matthew Peca – Men’s Ice Hockey – Forward – Petawawa, Ontario

Matthew Peca spearheaded Quinnipiac’s offense this past month, boasting five goals and five assists in eight games (5-3). However, it was Peca’s performance in the NCAA Tournament East Regional that set the sophomore forward above the rest. He led the entire NCAA field with four goals and an assist in the two-day span, which featured back-to-back wins en route to the 2013 Frozen Four. Included in the five points was a three-goal, one-assist effort against Union that featured a natural hat trick in a span of three-minutes-and-twelve seconds for the fastest hat trick in NCAA Tournament history. He was named the NCAA East Regional Most Valuable Player for the weekend.

Also nominated: Sophomore Ousmane Drame (Men’s Basketball), Michael Sagl (Men’s Lacrosse), Garrett Lane (Men’s Tennis)

Junior Brittany McQuain – Women’s Basketball – Forward – Independence, Mo.

Brittany McQuain was sensational throughout the month of March, averaging 10 points and 8.5 rebounds in six games (5-1) for the Bobcats. McQuain especially shined in the Northeast Conference Tournament where she was named the NEC Tournament’s Most Valuable Player and to the All-Tournament Team. She scored in double-figures in each of the three games, highlighted by a 14 point, 7-rebound game against Saint Francis University in the NEC Championship game. The No. 1 seeded Bobcats coasted through the tournament to claim its first title in program history and a trip to the 2013 NCAA Tournament. McQuain battled the monstrous front court of nationally-ranked No. 10 Maryland for six points and nine rebounds in the team’s final game of the 2012-13 season.
