Women's Basketball Defeats Mount St. Mary's, 68-57

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Four Quinnipiac players scored in double figures as the Bobcats defeated Mount St. Mary’s, 68-57, Saturday at Knott Arena. Quinnipiac improves to 20-3 overall and 12-1 in the Northeast Conference while Mount St. Mary’s falls to 7-19, 5-10 in the NEC.

Junior Erin Kerner (Erie, Pa.) led the Bobcats with 13 points while junior Brianna Rooney (Guilford, Conn.) had 12, junior Mandy Pennewell (West Chester, Pa.) had 11, and sophomore Courtney Kaminski (Dudley, Mass.) had 10. Senior Nicole Duperron narrowly missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.

Mount St. Mary’s was led by senior Dominique Mazucchi with 19 points, while freshman Mary Dunn picked up a double-double with 11 points and 14 rebounds.

Quinnipiac started cold, shooting just 2-11 from the field in the first 5:38 of the game, and Mount St. Mary’s pulled out to an 8-5 lead. The Bobcats responded with a 14-0 run, capped by a Kathleen Neyens (Jaffrey, N.H.) layup with 8:32 left to play in the first half, giving Quinnipiac a 21-8 lead.

The Mountaineers cut the lead to nine points, but a Kerner three-pointer just before the halftime buzzer gave the Bobcats a 33-21 advantage. Kerner led Quinnipiac with seven points at halftime, while Mount St. Mary’s was paced by senior Dominique Mazzuchi with nine points. Quinnipiac held the Mountaineers to just 25% (6-24) shooting in the first half.

Quinnipiac came out firing in the second half, and pushed the lead to 48-30, their largest of the game, after a Kerner three-pointer with 15:09 left in the second half. A three-pointer by the Mountaineers’ Tiffany Green cut the deficit to 53-42 with 10:32 remaining. The Bobcat lead stayed in double digits for the rest of the game, with the Mountaineers cutting it to 67-57 with 1:53 left in the game. That was as close as the game would get, and the Bobcats left with a 68-57 road victory.

Quinnipiac continues play Monday, Feb. 18 when they head to Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on NEC opponent Long Island University at 7:00 p.m.
