HAMDEN, Conn.- Mandy Pennewell (West Chester, Pa.) led five Bobcats in double-figures with 28 points as the Quinnipiac women’s basketball team tied the third-highest scoring output in program history to defeat Mount St. Mary’s, 109-72, Monday night at the TD Banknorth Sports Center.
Monique Lee (Lynn, Mass.) contributed a double-double of 18 points and 15 rebounds while Courtney Kaminski (Dudley, Mass.) (14), Krystal Lazos (Medford, N.J.) (13) and Brianna Rooney (Guilford, Conn.) (10) added double-figure scoring efforts. Lazos’ 13 points are a career-high. Rooney also added a career-high nine assists. The Bobcats also collected season-highs in rebounds (60) and assists (36).
The 109 points tied the 1982-83 team’s 109-point performance Jan. 21, 1983 against UMass-Lowell. Only the same 1982-83 team’s 129-point effort Jan. 13, 1983 at Sacred Heart and the 1980-81 team’s 112-point performance Jan. 17, 1981 vs. Thames Community College trumped tonight’s Bobcat effort. Tonight’s output represents the 10th 100-point performance in Quinnipiac women’s basketball history.
Tiffany Green scored a team-high 19 points for Mount St. Mary’s, while Hassanah Oliver and Dominique Mazzuchi added 13 apiece. Brianna Gauthier also contributed 12.
The Bobcats took just four seconds to score their first points of the game and they never looked back. They built an eight-point lead less than four minutes in, and while the Mountaineers twice cut the deficit to two prior to the midway point of the stanza, the Mount would get no closer.
Quinnipiac outscored the Mount, 31-11, in the final 10 minutes of the first half to take a 50-28 lead into the locker room. Lee compiled a double-double of 11 points (5-5 FG) and 10 rebounds and Pennewell added 10 points to pace the Bobcats.
Mazzuchi connected on three first-half three-point field goals to finish the period with a team-high 11 points.
The second half began and the rout was officially on. Quinnipiac’s lead swelled to just five and a half minutes into the period and reached a game-high 42 with 50 seconds remaining.
The Bobcats outshot the Mountaineers, 51.7 percent (46-89) to 37.1 percent (23-62) from the floor, while edging the Mount in three-point field goal percentage, 42.9 percent (9-21) to 38.5 percent (10-26), and free throw percentage, 61.5 percent (8-13) to 55.2 percent (16-29). Quinnipiac dominated the glass, outrebounding the Mount, 60-33.
Quinnipiac returns to action Saturday when they play host to Long Island University (12-3, 3-1 NEC) in a pivotal Northeast Conference match-up. Opening tip is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the TD Banknorth Sports Center.
