Long Range Shooting Leads Women's Basketball To Tough Road Win

Junior Mandy Pennewell (West Chester, Pa.) scored a game-high18 points on 7-10 shooting, including 4-7 from three-point range to lead Quinnipiac past the University of Delaware, 59-49 in Newark, Del.  The Bobcats win their sixth straight, and are now 7-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play, while Delaware falls to 1-8.

 

The Bobcats shot 9-22 from three-point range for the game. 

 

Pennewell opened the game with a three pointer from the right corner, giving the Bobcats an early lead. It was answered by a three pointer by Delaware’s Kyle DeHaven on the next Blue Hen possession.

 

The game remained close, with Quinnipiac building a 4 point lead at the 13:08 mark, but Delaware took their first lead of the game, 16-14, on a three pointer by Gracie Palucis with 9:01 left to play in the first half.

 

Quinnipiac regained the lead on a Sarah McGowan (Red Lion, Pa.) three pointer with 7:11 remaining. A Pennewell three pointer pushed the Bobcat lead to 30-22 at the 3:25 mark.

 

Palucis hit a three pointer with 2.7 seconds left in the first half cut Quinnipiac’s lead to 32-27 as the teams went to the locker rooms.

 

Pennewell led all scorers at halftime with 10 points on 4-6 shooting, including 2-4 from beyond the arc.  McGowan provided a spark off the bench for the bobcats with eight points on 2-3 three-point shooting. Freshman Ariene Jenkins paced the Blue Hens with seven first-half points.

 

Delaware’s Vanessa Kabongo opened the second half with six unanswered points, giving the Blue Hens a 33-32 lead. Brianna Rooney (Guilford, Conn.) regained the lead for the Bobcats with a three-pointer from the left corner.

 

Quinnipiac slowly built the lead, and consecutive Pennewell three-pointers gave the Bobcats their largest advantage of the game, 47-36.

 

Delaware cut the lead to 50-46 at the 5:20 mark, but that was as close as they would get.

 

The Bobcats continue play Saturday, December 22 when they take on Yale University at the TD Banknorth Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.
