Junior Mandy Pennewell (West Chester, Pa.) scored a game-high 15 points as Quinnipiac beat Stony Brook Thursday night at the TD Banknorth Sports Center, 58-41. The loss drops the Seawolves to 2-4, while the win improves the Bobcats to 3-1 on the season.

The game started off slow as both teams were unable to score until Quinnipiac’s Brianna Rooney (Guilford, Conn.) took a pass from Pennewell on a fast break and scored the first points of the game at the 17:07 mark of the first half.

The Seawolves’ Morgan Patrick was able to get Stony Brook on the board with a lay-up at the 15:34 mark.

After a slow start, Quinnipiac jumped out to a 12-5 advantage on a Courtney Kaminski (Dudley, Mass.) jump shot from the right side of the court.

Monique Lee (Lynn, Mass.) made her presence felt underneath as she drove to the basket to score and was fouled. She made the free throw to build the Quinnipiac lead to 10 at 8:42 of the first half.

Pennewell’s third three-pointer of the first half increased the Bobcats’ lead to twenty-two, 35-13. The basket marked an 18-1 run for Quinnipiac.

Quinnipiac would continue to build on that lead as Erin Kerner (Erie, Pa.) took a long pass from Kaminski and scored on a fast break lay-up, 39-14.

Stony Brook tried to hold the ball for the last shot of the first half, but Rooney was able to steal the ball and run the court before being fouled with only 1.4 seconds remaining in the half. She made both free throws, giving the Bobcats a commanding halftime lead of 41-18.

The Bobcats put together a 10-2 run to start the half, and led 51-20 at the 10:45 mark.

Stony Brook would eventually cut into the one-time 31 point lead for the Bobcats, getting within 15 at 56-41, but that would be as close as they would get.

Pennewell led all scorers with 15 points, while going 3-5 from behind the arc. Freshman Kirsten Jeter led the way for Stony Brook with seven points.

The Bobcats return to action Saturday, December 1 when they travel to Worcester, Mass. to play the Crusaders of the College of the Holy Cross at 1:00 p.m.
