HAMDEN, Conn. – Eric Weber (New Milford, Conn.) pitched 7 1/3 innings of scoreless ball and Bobak Emamian (Cheshire, Conn.) hit his first career home run as the Quinnipiac baseball team shut out Fairfield, 3-0, Thursday afternoon at Quinnipiac Baseball Field. With the win, the Bobcats improve to 9-25, while the Stags fall to 11-26.

John Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) and Anes Koummal (Stamford, Conn.) each contributed two hits for the Bobcats. Albie DeSimone, Jason Rago, and Peter Allen had two hits each for the Stags.

Weber scattered seven hits over 7 1/3 shutout innings. He struck out four and walked one to improve to 1-4 on the season. Joe Duffy (Commack, N.Y.) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to pick up his second save of the season. He allowed one hit and struck out one. Rick Piccirillo took the loss for Fairfield, allowing three earned runs on eight hits and two walks. He struck out five.

The Bobcats got on the board first in the second inning. Pete Kummerfeldt’s (Pompton Lakes, N.J.) home-run bid hit the top of the right-center field fence and caromed back into the field for a double to start the inning. After Joe Poletsky (Riverside, Conn.) singled up the middle to advance Kummerfeldt to third, Blake Barone (Branford, Conn.) plated what proved to be the game-winning run with a groundout to second.

Weber navigated his way through a three-error inning without surrendering a run in the third. After he struck out Dave Brizzolara to begin the stanza, errors on consecutive ground balls put runners on first and third. A dropped foul ball behind the plate accounted for the third error. But Weber induced a ground ball to third and struck out the final batter of the inning to escape unscathed.

Quinnipiac tacked on two more runs in the seventh. After Koummal singled to start the inning, Emamian sent a lined shot over the left field fence to make it 3-0. The round-tripper signaled the end of Piccirillo’s day.

The Bobcats return to action tomorrow afternoon, when they begin a four-game series against Northeast Conference foe Long Island. The opening, nine-inning game of the series is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. on Quinnipiac Baseball Field.
