CANTON, N.Y. – The Quinnipiac University men’s ice hockey team won their fourth consecutive game as they defeated St. Lawrence, 4-2, at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y. The win marks the first time that Quinnipiac defeated Clarkson and St. Lawrence in the same weekend on the road. The Bobcats improve to 6-4-1 overall and 4-2-1 in ECAC Hockey. St. Lawrence drops to 4-6-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league action. The win was also Quinnipiac’s first win at Appleton Arena all-time.
Dan Henningson (Edmonton, Alb.) scored twice for the Bobcats as David Marshall (Buffalo, Minn.) also assisted on two goals. Chris Myers (Wallaceburg, Ont.), Jean-Marc Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) and Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) also scored for the Bobcats.
St. Lawrence struck first when Travis Vermuelen scored his third goal of the season at tge. The Saints’ Alex Curran hooked up with Derek Keller to the left of Quinnipiac’s goal, who passed behind the Bobcat net to Vermuelen. Vermuelen maneuvered out in front of Nick Pisellini (Itasca, Ill.) in the Bobcats’ goal and slipped a shot past the freshman goalie to give St. Lawrence the early 1-0 lead.
Quinnipiac was quick to answer when Henningson tied the game at 1-1 at the 12:16 mark. Zurevinski won the face-off, sending the puck back to Henningson. Henningson’s blast through traffic beat Alex Petizian to his left to give Henningson his second goal of the season after his first came on Friday night against Clarkson.
St. Lawrence took a 2-1 lead at the 11:28 mark of the second period. Matt Generous netted his second goal of the year on assist by Sean Flanagan and Brock McBride. McBride was able to hook up who Flanagan whose shot was blocked by a Quinnipiac defenseman. The puck bounced between the face-off circles where Generous collected it and put a shot on goal, beating Pisellini to his right.
On the power play, Henningson scored his second goal of the game to tie the score at 2-2 at the 14:11 mark. After St. Lawrence’s Aaron Bogosian won the face-off in the Saints’ zone, Marshall broke up a failed SLU clear and fed Bryan Leitch (Coquitlam, B.C.). Leitch then fed Henningson who was streaking down the right side of the St. Lawrence zone. His one-timer beat Petizian to the lower right corner.
Quinnipiac took a 3-2 lead at the 16:19 mark when Mark Nelson (Prince George, B.C.) stopped a St. Lawrence rush and cleared the puck to Sean Coughlin (Winthrop, Mass.). Coughlin sent a pass up ice to Myers, who was heading up the right side of the ice. Myers’ shot from the right face-off circle went top shelf to give the Bobcats the lead with less than four minutes to play in the period.
Quinnipiac took a two-goal lead when Beaudoin scored his second goal of the season. Marshall won the face-off in St. Lawrence’s zone, sending the puck over to Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.). Wong then moved the puck to the opposite face-off circle where Beaudoin unleashed a one-timer that beat Petizian to the top left corner of the goal.
The Bobcats added to their lead at the 17:55 mark when Zach Hansen (White Bear Lake, Minn.) handled the puck in the Bobcats zone before passing to Leitch. Leitch headed up ice with Zurevinski to his left. After crossing the Saints’ blueline, Leitch cut in front of the net while dropping off a pass to Zurevinski. The freshman wing slipped his fourth goal of the season past St. Lawrence’s goalie to seal the 5-2 win.
In goal, Pisellini stopped 28 shots in net for his fifth victory of the season.
Quinnipiac returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 26 when they travel to Princeton, N.J. to take on the Princeton University Tigers in an ECAC Hockey game set for a 7 p.m. start.
