WILKES-BARRE/SCRANTON, Pa. – Former Quinnipiac All-American defenseman Reid Cashman (Red Wing, Minn.) has signed with the top affiliate of the National Hockey League’s Pittsburgh Penguins, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League. Last season, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton lost in the Calder Cup Finals to the Chicago Wolves.
Cashman previously played for the AHL’s Toronto Marlies and the ECHL’s Columbia Inferno, affiliates of the NHL’s Toronto Maple Leafs. Last season, Cashman split time between both teams, totaling three assists in eight games with the Marlies and five goals and 22 assists with the Inferno.
In his four-year career at Quinnipiac, Cashman tallied 23 goals and 125 assists for 148 career points in 151 games played. He currently holds the records for games played (151) and career assists (125) as well as the record for assists (35, 2006-07) and points (45, 2004-05) in a season for defenseman. He also ranks eighth in career points.
In 2004-05, Cashman became the first Division I hockey defenseman since 1986 to lead his conference, then the Atlantic Hockey League, in scoring when he totaled 45 points as a sophomore. He was named a finalist that season for the Hobey Baker Award, which is presented annually to the best overall player in Division I hockey. Cashman went on to collect All-American Third Team honors in 2005 and All-American Second Team honors in 2006.
