HAMDEN,
Conn. - The Quinnipiac University men's ice hockey team snapped a 10-game winless streak with a 2-0 shutout
against Colgate at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn. Searching for
their first win since Dec. 12 (5-2 against American International), the Bobcats
received goals from senior Greg Holt (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.) and junior Zach Hansen
(White Bear Lake, Minn.) as well as a stellar performance from goalie Dan
Clarke (Belleville, Ont.) to improve to 14-12-2 overall and 8-8-0 in ECAC
Hockey. Colgate drops to 11-11-5 overall and 7-6-1 in league play. Quinnipiac extended its unbeaten streak when leading after two periods to 45 games,
at 41-0-4, dating back to 2007.
"We
are extremely relieved to get back in the win column," Quinnipiac Head Coach
Rand Pecknold said. "The boys are pretty pumped right now. There were a lot of
games during this stretch that we should have won and didn't. It's good to get
it together."
Holt
put the Bobcats out in front with his seventh goal of the season midway through
the first period. After a failed Colgate rush resulted in the puck wrapping around
the boards, behind the Quinnipiac goal, Mike Glaicar (Kamloops, B.C.) picked up the loose puck just
below the left face-off circle. The sophomore defender spied Holt streaking
down the ice and connected with the senior wing on the breakaway. The pass found
Holt's tape as he skated through the Colgate defense and into the Raiders'
defensive zone, leaving him one-on-one with Colgate goalie Alex Evin. The lefty
Holt faked to his left and then flipped a shot over Evin's left shoulder,
depositing the game's first tally, top-shelf. The assist was Glaicar's fifth of
the year.
"We've
been doing a lot of neutral zone work this past week," Holt said. "[Mike]
Glaicar made a great pass and I was able to finish. We're pretty happy to get
back on track."
Hansen
gave the Bobcats the insurance they needed with his second goal of the season
with just under two minutes to play in the game. With a 5-on-3 power play,
Quinnipiac worked the puck around the perimeter. Hansen handled the puck above
the right face-off circle and sent it across ice to freshman Zach Davies
(Smithers, B.C.). Davies then fed the puck to Brandon Wong (Victoria, B.C.) who
was sitting on the left post. Wong watched Hansen move into the slot before
feeding him to give Quinnipiac a two-goal lead.
Clarke
recorded his second career shutout after holding Colgate scoreless and turning
away 26 shots. Clarke stopped 10 in the second period, including a deflection
that Colgate head coach Don Vaughan contested went through the net. Clarke's
counterpart, Colgate's Alex Evin, stopped 34 of Quinnipiac's 36 shots for the
evening.
"It
was one his best games," Pecknold said of Clarke. "Clarkie was awesome tonight,
he made some big plays. This game was right up there with his game against Ohio
State. Clarke has been a little up-and-down lately, but tonight he looked like
he did in November."
Quinnipiac
returns to action next weekend with a trip to North Country to take on St.
Lawrence and Clarkson. The Bobcats and Saints play on Friday, Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.
at Appleton Arena in Canton, N.Y. The Bobcats close out its trip at Cheel Arena
in Potsdam, N.Y. against Clarkson at 7 p.m.
