HAMDEN, Conn. - The Quinnipiac University men's ice
hockey team jumped five spots to No. 4 in the latest addition of the INCH Power
Rankings, released Sunday, Nov. 29, 2009. Quinnipiac entered the polls for the
first time on Nov. 8 at No. 19 and have since moved up 15 spots, more than any
other team in NCAA Division I men's ice hockey. Quinnipiac currently holds the
nation's longest win streak at eight games and also carry the country's top
winning percentage at 12-1-0 (.923).
After a thrilling 5-4 overtime win against No. 10 UMass
on Saturday, Quinnipiac reached the No. 1 spot in USCHO.com's PairWise
Rankings, a subjective ranking system used by the NCAA to determine the field
for the NCAA Tournament. The top spot is a first for the Bobcats, who also sit
in first place in ECAC Hockey at 7-0-0, their best start to their conference
schedule since joining the league for the 2005-06 season.
On the ice, Quinnipiac totes the nation's top offense
with 56 goals, while its 4.31 goals per game, through 13 games, is second in
the country. The Bobcats have not been held to fewer than three goals in any of
their first 13 games, and have scored five goals in seven of their 13 games. 15
different players have scored a goal for Quinnipiac this year, while Brandon
Wong (Victoria, B.C.), Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) and Scott Zurevinski
(Saskatoon, Saskatchewan) all have eight or more. Six different Bobcats have
reached double digits in points, while nine have nine points or more. In
addition, 20 of the 22 different skaters to take the ice this season for
Quinnipiac have tallied a point.
Wong leads all Bobcats with 19 points on a team-high 11
assists to go along with eight goals. Two of those goals came on Saturday. With
Quinnipiac trailing by a goal with just over a minute to play in regulation,
Wong one-timed a pass from Zach Hansen (White Bear Lake, Minn.) past UMass'
goalie to send the game to overtime. He then scored the game-winner to give
Quinnipiac its eighth straight win.
Lampe leads Quinnipiac leads Quinnipiac with nine goals
while also assisting on nine more for 18 points, while Zurevinski checks in
with eight goals and six assists for 14 points. Senior captain Jean-Marc
Beaudoin (St. Paul, Alb.) has totaled four goals and seven assists for 11
points, while Mike Atkinson's (Sparta, N.J.) career-best six goals go along
with his four assists for 10 points. Atkinson is one of six players in Division
I hockey with two short-handed goals. Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.) has
totaled five goals and five assists for 10 points, the most among Quinnipiac's
13 freshmen.
The Bobcats return to action on Friday, Dec. 4 when they
travel to Ingalls Rink in New Haven, Conn. to take on No. 11 Yale University in
an ECAC Hockey match-up set for a 7 p.m. start. The Bobcats then head to
Providence, R.I. on Saturday, Dec. 5 to take on Brown University at Meehan Auditorium
at 7 p.m.
