HAMDEN, Conn. - Five
different Quinnipiac men's ice hockey players to account for the Bobcats 5-2
win against St. Lawrence at the TD Bank Sports Center in Hamden, Conn.
Quinnipiac improves to 6-1-0 overall and 2-0-0 in ECAC Hockey after sweeping
its first two league games of the year. St. Lawrence drops to 5-3-1 overall and
1-1-0 in ECAC Hockey play.
In an overall physical game from the beginning, both
teams combined for 22 penalties. The Quinnipiac penalty-kill unit was in full
force again. A night after Quinnipiac stopped two of three Clarkson power plays
and scored two shorthanded goals, the Bobcats allowed one goal on seven St.
Lawrence power plays. On the other side of the special teams battle, the
Bobcats scored on three of their five power plays, including markers by Brandon
Wong (Victoria, B.C.), Yuri Bouharevich (Montreal, Que.) and Eric Lampe
(Madison, Wisc.). Dan Clarke (Belleville, Ont.) stopped 27 shots in goal for his
second win in as many nights.
"I'm always excited to get four points out of an ECAC
Hockey weekend," head coach Rand Pecknold said. "I don't think it was a great
game, we took too many penalties. I thought the penalty kill was great, and [Dan]
Clarke was good tonight too."
Wong scored his fourth goal of the season at the 9:29
mark of the first period when he collected a rebound on the doorstep and went
top-shelf on St. Lawrence goalie Robby Moss. Jeremy Langlois (Tempe, Ariz.) set
up the play when he sent the puck around the boards to be picked up by Greg
Holt (Mt. Sinai, N.Y.). Holt put a shot on goal from just above the face-off
circle, which Moss kicked away to his right. Wong took control of the puck just
in front of the crease and scored to give Quinnipiac a 1-0 lead.
Freshman Zach Currie (Victoria, B.C.)scored his first
career goal less than two minutes into the second period. Mike Dalhuisen
(Nymegen, Holland) dug the puck out of the corner by the Quinnipiac goal and
hooked up with Currie just above the blue line. Currie skated through the neutral
zone with a St. Lawrence defender draped over his back before shaking him and
going one-on-one with Moss. Currie faked a shot and then flipped a backhand
shot over Moss' shoulder to give the Bobcats a two-goal lead. Both players pick
up their first career points on the play.
Dalhuisen picked up his second assist of the day when he
sent a pass to Brett Dickinson (Furlong, Pa.). Dickinson put a shot on goal
that Moss kicked out in front of the crease. Yuri Bouharevich (Montreal, Que.)
picked up the puck, skated across the crease and beat Moss to give Quinnipiac a
3-0 lead.
Reese Rolheiser (Edmonton, Alb.) scored his second goal
of the season with less than three minutes to play in the second period. Mike
Glaicar (Kamloops, B.C.) took control of the puck in the Bobcats' zone and sent
it up-ice to Scott Zurevinski (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). Zurevinski wrapped the
puck around the goal where Rolheiser one-timed a shot past Moss from the left
face-off circle.
St. Lawrence got on the board with 1:32 left in the period.
George Hughes sent a pass through the Quinnipiac defense to Mark Armstrong in
the slot. Armstrong's one-timer banged home past Clarke for the Saints' first
goal.
Eric Lampe (Madison, Wisc.) answered less than a minute
later with his team-leading sixth goal of the season. Holt took control of the
puck after a scrum along the half boards and passed to Wong. Wong skated into
the slot, drawing a St. Lawrence defender before dropping a pass off to Lampe
who was streaking to the net. Wong's assist was his team-leading seventh of the
season while Holt picked up his second assist of the night and fourth of the
year.
Brandon Bollig added a goal for St. Lawrence with 16:49
left in the game. Bollig was set up on the play by Jeff Caister and Kyle
Flanagan.
