HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University field hockey
and women’s soccer teams, in a joint effort with Longstreth, raised over $600
this past weekend for the Susan G. Komen Foundation’s “Play 4The Cure” fund to
benefit breast cancer research. Field Hockey hosted Monmouth while women’s
soccer played Wagner on the Mt. Carmel campus of Quinnipiac University. It was
the second consecutive year that both teams worked together for the event.
“In the current economic climate to raise $600 for any
charity and the Susan G. Komen Foundation in particular is commendable,”
women’s soccer head coach Dave Clarke said. “ When you factor in the poor
weather conditions, both teams deserve a lot of credit for their efforts.
Every dollar raised will be put to good use and hopefully researchers will find
a cure for the disease that impacts and has impacted so many lives.”
Both teams wore pink warm-up jerseys, while the women’s
soccer team sported pink hair ties and bracelets and field hockey wore pink
socks. The parents of the Quinnipiac and Monmouth field hockey plays sponsored
a bake sale at the Quinnipiac Field Hockey & Lacrosse Turf Field with all
benefits going to the “Play 4 The Cure” fund while women’s soccer sold hot
cocoa, coffee and hot cider on a day that featured heavy rain, wind and 40
degree temperatures.
“This is an example of how athletics can transcend from
the sweat and mud to causes important to every person on this planet,” field
hockey head coach Becca Kohli said. “Working with our women's soccer team as
well as Monmouth field hockey shows a sense of community that makes being an
athlete an extra special experience. Being able to raise this money for breast
cancer research gives us all the ability to look at the greater picture and not
just our own team and own sport. It has given our teams a wonderful sense of
community and I am really proud to have been a part of the Play 4 the Cure,
organized by Longstreth Sporting Goods.”
The event, which benefitted breast cancer awareness, was part of Quinnipiac
Athletic’s Positive Play initiative which encourages community involvement by
Quinnipiac’s student-athletes and coaches.
