Men’s and Women’s Tennis Head Coach Mike Quitko Earns 500th Career Win; Bobcats Sweep Red Flash

HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac University men’s and women’s tennis head coach Mike Quitko reached a significant personal milestone on Saturday afternoon as the Bobcats swept Saint Francis University to seal his 500th career win. Both the men’s and the women’s teams’ each won with 4-0 decisions en route to the historic win for Coach Quitko.

When asked about his 500th victory, Coach Quitko remarked, “It’s about time.” All kidding aside of course.  Quitko was very proud of his team for their efforts in the match. “Actually No. 500 is no different than No. 1, No. 2 or No. 3, all the way down the line until you get there. You’ve got to hit one ball at a time, get one point at a time, and win a match as a collective unit. I’ve been blessed with terrific young players, who really deserve all the credit.”

Quitko, a 14-time conference coach of the year honoree, became the first coach in the history of Quinnipiac athletics to earn 500 victories while coaching for Quinnipiac. Now in his 22nd season, the tennis mastermind only trails Dave Fish of Harvard for most wins among active Division I coaches in the New England region.

Quitko earned his very first win back in 1991, when he led the Braves to a 9-0 win over Albertus Magnus on September 12 in New Haven. Quitko picked up his 300th career coaching victory in a 7-0 triumph over Holy Cross in 2004; and nabbed his 400th career coaching win in April of 2008 with a win over Fairfield. For his accomplishments, Quitko was inducted into the Quinnipiac Athletics Hall of Fame on February 28, 2009.

The men’s match finished up first, as Sebastian Barbero (Buenos Aires, Argentina) defeated Washi Gervais, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 to solidify Quitko’s 500th win. Quinnipiac earned the first point of the match when Fahoum Fahoum (Haifa, Israel) and Garrett Lane (Reading, Mass.) clinched doubles with an 8-6 victory at No. 1. Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) earned QU’s third point with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles and Barbero sealed the deal at No. 1. Saint Francis needed to forfeit at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.
