Men's And Women's Tennis Resume NEC Play Against Bryant On Saturday
HAMDEN, Conn. – The Quinnipiac University men’s and women’s tennis teams resume their quests for the Northeast Conference Title on Saturday afternoon. The Bobcats welcome two talented NEC opponents in Bryant University to the QU Outdoor Tennis Courts, with all the action scheduled to begin at 12 p.m.
The men’s team tennis team opened conference play two weeks ago with a 5-2 win over Saint Francis (Pa.). When asked about the match, Head Coach Mike Quitko was satisfied with the squad’s effort. "I am pleased to come away with our first conference win of the year," said Quitko. "Saint Francis (Pa.) competed very hard and forced us to make some key shots at critical junctures in the match." The Bobcats dropped the doubles’ segment of the match, but persevered taking five out of six in singles’ competition.
Sophomore Corey Morgenstern (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) leads the team in individual victories with 11 thus far. The freshmen duo of Eric Ambrosio (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and John Petrini (Stamford, Conn.) are also off to stellar starts, combining for 15 wins in their first seasons with the program.
The NEC opening doubleheader also featured a tremendous showing from the women’s tennis team as well. The Bobcats swept the visiting Red Flash, dropping just one set on the afternoon. "It's always great to begin conference competition with a comfortable win," said Quitko. "Saint Francis (Pa.) has improved vastly since last season and I am happy to come away with our first W."
Juniors Sarah Viebrock (Carmel, N.Y.) and Rachel Cantor (Short Hills, N.J.) have spearheaded the charge this season. Viebrock and Cantor have combined for 17 wins including a 5-0 start when paired together doubles. In addition, the freshmen pairing of Michelle Dassa (Marlboro, N.J.) and Jacqueline Raynor (Garden City, N.Y.) have also been impressive, boasting a 17-4 mark in doubles’ competition.
Quinnipiac is back in action on Sunday afternoon at Hofstra. First serve of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. For all information regarding the men’s and women’s tennis programs, please visit www.QuinnipiacBobcats.com.
