Quinnipiac men's ice hockey senior Matthew Peca (Petawawa, Ontario) was named Quinnipiac's March Athlete of the Month.
In five games for the month of March, Peca accumulated a team-high four points on two goals and two assists. In the Bobcats ECAC Hockey Championship Quarterfinal series against Union on Mar. 13-15, Peca led all Bobcats with two goals and an assist to help Quinnipiac reached the tournament semifinals for the third straight season. In the first game, Peca fed Sam Anas for the game-tying goals with less than a minute to play to force overtime, where Alex Barron netted the game-winner. He went on to score in each of the Bobcats next two games to clinch the series, and also picked up an assist in the Bobcats' semifinal loss to Harvard.
On March 31, Peca completed his career at Quinnipiac when he signed with the National Hockey League's Tampa Bay Lightning and reported to the team's minor league affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch of the American Hockey League.
In the final month of the year, Peca became the fourth player in program history to reach 100 career assists - finishing with 101 for his four-year career - and completed his four years in Hamden as the fifth leading scorer in program history with 143 points. He was also named to the ECAC Hockey First Team - just the fourth player in school history to do so.
