HAMDEN, Conn. – Quinnipiac’s men’s cross country sophomore Brendan Copley (Colchester, Vt.) and women’s cross country Niamh Ashe (East Islip, N.Y.) have been named Quinnipiac’s August Athletes of the Month.
Male Athlete of the Month
Brendan Copley – Sophomore – Height: 5-8 – Colchester, Vt.
The freshman phenom a year ago, Copley stormed out of the gates with a time of 18:58.71 in the 6k event to pick up his first career victory. The 2012 All-Northeast Conference runner becomes the first Bobcat to win an event since 2008, when Richard Klauber won the Northeast Conference Championship. His blazing time was nearly a minute faster than his 2012 result at the Stony Brook Invitational when he finished in 19:49.87. Copley set the pace throughout and was able to sprint home to victory as he finished more than 15 seconds ahead of his junior teammate.
Also nominated: men’s soccer junior Machel Baker
Female Athlete of the Month
Niamh Ashe – Freshman – Height: 5-2 – East Islip, N.Y.
In just her first career event as a Bobcat, Ashe navigated her way to the front of the field and sprinted home to a third place finish, tops on the team. Ashe became the first Quinnipiac freshman since Becca White back in 2009 to finish in the top-5 overall at an event. She crossed the finish line in 14:49.18 as she was bested by just two senior Stony Brook competitors. Even more impressive was Ashe kept her ground amongst a group of three Stony Brook seniors to finish in third, nearly 30 seconds ahead of the fifth place finisher.
Also nominated: women’s soccer senior Aine McKeever; field hockey graduate student Kristin Engelke; women’s volleyball freshman Allison Leigh; women’s rugby sophomore Natalie Kosko
